Did I just become a soccer mom?

Brody had his first game last week. He is such a fast little seven year old. It has been a year since he had played soccer. We forgot how much they run during the games. At practice the coach focuses more on fundamentals like dribbling and passing skills, which is what six and seven year olds need.

However, because Brody has Type 1 Diabetes we realized we were ill prepared for all the running he does during a game. Brody's blood glucose (sugar) levels dropped too low at the beginning of the game and he had to sit out for 15 minutes while we corrected his numbers. We had enough carbohydrates with protein to get him through one low but not two. We had to be cautious with how much he played for the rest of the game.

For this week's game we will be giving him extra carbs right before practice and have him run his glucose levels on the high side (over 200).

Proud momma here! We have been finding that Brody is so advanced for these non-competitive league teams. Only about two other teammates on his current team can keep up with him. We have learned that there is another soccer league in town that starts actual competitive travel soccer at eight years old. We will be having Brody try out for that in the spring. In the meantime when he finishes this season with his current team we will have him join this new team that will teach him more skills that are more nationally recognized. I am so proud of him and all that he is learning that he can do with Type 1 Diabetes.

Here's to another night of soccer practice. Let's go Lightning Hawks!
