Cloth diapering.... Why do it?

People choose to cloth diaper for many reasons. The most common reasons are that they are economical (in the long term), environmentally friendly, and healthier for babies. Our reasons mostly stem from economical reasons but we love the added benefits of environmentally friendly and that they are healthier.

Our cloth diapering journey started when our son was about 14 months old. A friend of ours raved about it. My husband actually got to see them before I did. He thought they were great so I said, hey why not, let's give it a try. We haven't turned back since.

You see they aren't like the steriotypical "grandma era" style of diapers with the pin that you think you might poke the baby accidentally with. Modern day cloth diapers are made with snaps and /or aplix (Velcro). But don't get me wrong, your "grandma" style diapers are still very much used to this day. If fact, we used a few the first couple weeks of our baby girls' life. I mostly kept them on hand for laundry day.

I know you all think that the start up of cloth diapering is expensive. Yes, it can very well be. But if you know me, you know I am a bargain shopper who is not afraid of buying used! The average new cloth diaper probably will run you about $15-$20 each. I have a mixed of used and brand new. My new diapers run me $18, they are all BumGenious brand and my used diapers ran me anywhere between $7 to $12 each. My new Thirsties All In Ones I actually won off of a blog giveaway!

My stash (that's cloth diaper lingo for group of diapers) consist of about 30 diapers. So it probably cost me about $350. Some of those are even from when Brody was using them. Now think of how much disposables cost each month, then for one year, then for about two to three years a child is in diapers. I technically have no need for anymore diapers for the rest of Isabella's diapering life.
Unless, we get some as a gift or I find an absolutely adorable print, trust me cloth diapering can give you a shopping addiction. ;)

Okay so what kind of diapers do I have!

See the pictures and their descriptions below.

Fitted diaper (above and below), requires a waterproof cover

Waterproof cover, used with fitted diapers, inserts, or traditional prefold diapers. (A cover with prefolds is the most economical)

All In Ones (the waterproof cover and absorbent liners are all sewn together. Usually more expensive but so easy to use)

Pocket diapers, waterproof cover with inserts that are stuffed inside a pocket in the diaper. Also very easy to use. Not as spendy as an all in one diaper but more costly than a cover with prefolds.

My next diaper post will be on the best washing routine. Yep, I do all the diaper laundry myself. Although, a great baby shower gift for parents who choose to cloth diaper would be a month of diaper laundry service! That gives the family of a new baby a little less to worry about during the first month.
